Wallcovering Wednesday: Wallpaper Trends

Wallpaper is big. It’s not just for your grandparent’s 100 year-old cottage, or for that antique store around the corner. Wallpaper is modern, fun, young and trending. Kathy Basil from Hirshfield’s design studio realizes that not only is it trending, but it’s become a necessary addition to your home. Wallcoverings are flying off the shelves and onto feature walls, half bathrooms, children’s rooms, master bedrooms and anywhere you want a little charm and bold personality.

The patterns Basil sees in the spotlight are ones with a floral flare and intense texture. Designers are going bold.  Eden Verbena from Romo’s Black Edition takes the popularity award. It’s beautiful Monet-like flowers are great for a space with fun atmosphere.

“In one pattern, Eden describes a whole trend. It’s large scale, playful, floral, not too serious, modified, even hippie.”

{interior design trends: florals}

Designer Guild floral wallpaper

Jen Ziemer in Midwest Home Magazine

On this dreary first of May I think some floral inspiration is needed to brighten the day. Florals started gathering momentum last year and continue to grow in popularity. This season’s floral trend is bright, big and bold! With that said, I’m just starting to see more traditional patterns like chintz and toilés appearing in magazines and on Pinterest. The floral frenzy has begun. Read the rest of this entry »

ENCHANTMENT COLLECTION…BY THIBAUT

Thibaut is one of our favorite wallpaper lines and we’re always excited when we receive a new Thibaut book. Their new collection, Enchantment, explodes with color and offers classic patterns designed with that unique Thibaut look.

Thibaut has this to say about the Enchantment Collection:

Welcome a new interpretation of chinoiserie in the Enchantment Collection. With an eastern influence, this fresh collection of coordinating wallpaper, embroidery, print and woven fabrics pays homage to traditional European artistic styles. Modern design elements mimic fashionable chinoiserie compositions like scenics, fretwork and delicate florals.

Thibaut’s limited edition collection, Monterey, offers a variety of fresh patterns with a bohemian vibe. Strong yet comfortable colors ranging from vibrant coral to peacock-blue round out this unique wallpaper and fabric collection. Versatile patterns flexibly coordinate to create a collection that has a hip new take on traditional style.

Color or colour? Either way you spell it, Thibaut’s newest wallpaper book is filled with fabulous color combinations and patterns. I know, no need to state the obvious. Doesn’t it seem like the patterns are crying out, “look at me, I’m more gorgeous than the pattern next to me.” In addition to wallpaper, the Monterey book carries coordinating and complimentary fabrics.

Okay – if you’re thinking that red sofa doesn’t look good with the wallpaper, I would concur. And that dog? The home of Britt Van Deusen is where the Thibaut team set up the photo shoot for the Monterey book. Being a wallpaper geek, I loved Britt Van Deusen’s blog posts on the weeklong photo shoot. Read all about it on her blog Design Omnivore. Britt is a fine artist who shares her love of art, life, and all that is design on her blog –  it’s an entertaining and informative read.

Thibaut books are available at most Hirshfield’s stores; call first before you make a special trip.

Happy Easter everyone!

{bits & pieces: thibaut’s faux bois wallpaper}

I planted the seed a couple of weeks ago. In passing, I mentioned to my husband, ” Think about horizontal (painted) wood planking on the headboard wall in our bedroom.” Audible groan, and then, “what are YOU talking about?” In our house, my ideas = husband doing a lot of the work.

That was before I saw this wallpaper in the new Neutral Resource book from Thibaut. The Hirshfield’s Design Studio staff first showed me the paper, and then a couple of the stores mentioned it. Everyone’s in agreement. It’s an excellent faux bois paper and all around great book. That extra layer of texture gives a room more character and added interest. What do you think?

A wide array of natural tones comprise Thibaut’s Neutral Resource wallpaper collection. Designs range from traditional classic patterns to novelty contemporary prints. A variety of metallics paired with colors such as soft fawn, stone, and charcoal enrich the neutral color palette. Specialty papers like cork and raffia enliven the collection with dimension and vitality.

The majority of H’s stores have the Thibaut books, but call first before making a special trip.

Enjoy your week! Spring is almost here.

There are so many rockin’ wallpapers available right now it makes my head spin. Traditional, European, retro, flocked, classic, vinyl, hand blocked, screen printed, transitional; wallpaper is very much in vogue.

The staff at Hirshfield’s Design Studio tell me naturals are trending: grasscloths, linen looking papers, bamboo, or silhouettes of nature, like trees and flowers. Also, for a single wall application (focal wall) geometric patterns and damask motifs are customer favorites. The wonderfully exotic Moroccan influence has been emerging over the past year and is now starting to appear in the wallpaper industry.

 Hirshfield’s carries an extensive wallpaper library in the majority of our stores. We offer wallpapers at all price points and have the most diverse selection of high-end or “to trade only” books in town. Our sales staff are wallpaper savvy and knowledgeable with every aspect of the world of wallpaper.

No other decorating product offers so much color, design and coverage to suit any mood, taste and need. Stop by your neighborhood Hirshfield’s and see for yourself all the exquisite wallcovering options.
