It was only a matter of time, right? Joanna Gaines has partnered with York Wallcovering for her first wallcovering collection aptly named  Magnolia Home.  This new wallpaper collection offers 16 signature designs in multiple colorways, with the core of the collection in neutral, black, and white

The designs and colors in this collection reflect Joanna’s very approachable style to decorating that we see on her TV show Fixer Upper. Patterns include shiplap, blueprints, quiet polka dots, vintage farm toile, botanicals, 1930s newsprint and a watercolor buffalo check.

An added bonus for consumers is that her wallpapers are backed with York’s Sure Strip® technology making for easier installation and easier removal.

{bits & pieces: utah mountain house by way of veranda magazine)

veranda magazine utah mountain home

From what I can tell this magnificent mountain home in Utah has some awesome views, but the attention to detail on the inside is what caught my eye. Can’t you envision many of this home’s design features in a cabin or lake home right here in the midwest?
See what you think. Tour the rest of the home right here.

Designer:  Anthony Baratta

Photographer:  Eric Piasecki

Wall color in this room is White Dove (OC-17) and the ceiling is Yarmouth Blue (HC-150) both by Benjamin Moore. No mention of any other wall or door colors in the resource section of the magazine.

{february color of the month: awakening 0560}

hirshfield's-paint-color-awakening

In sports, a utility player is one who can play several positions competently – a sort of jack of all trades. Hirshfeld’s February’s Color of the Month is just that. A color our employees go to when customers don’t want a gray and they don’t want a beige, but they want a neutral.

Awakening 0560 is a chameleon color.  It looks gray or it looks beige depending on the lighting in your home.  Some of our customers want to go gray (“because gray is all the rage, you know”) but can’t commit to a true gray without spending a lot of money changing their entire decor. Awakening is an excellent choice for hinting at the gray color trends.  You can see in the photo below it’s also a very flattering color when used with taupes, grays and browns.

Cindy (Hirshfield’s Maple Grove) says it’s a color that should satisfy EVERYONE! Pay attention all you “I-don’t-know-what-color-I-want” people! This is the color for you.

{friday finds: creating aged gray wood}

Cottage paint Hirshfield's

This is it. These are the only supplies you’ll need to start and finish this DIY project.

Are you a fan of the look and feel of rustic well worn barn wood? Beth (Hirshfield’s Woodbury) shares her quick and ridiculously easy tutorial on how to age wood using Cottage Paint products.

Here are directions for creating gray barn wood from new pine boards.

Quickly sand the wood with 60 grit sandpaper. Distress your boards and dust.

Cut one of Hirshfield’s yellow cellulose sponges into 10 pieces (so it’s a nice size to fit in your hand). Get it wet and wring it out so it’s pretty damp. With the sponge, pick up a little Cottage Paint in Antique White, and wash the board so you can still see the grain. Allow the board to dry at least an hour.

Using another damp sponge* piece, pick up some Cottage Paint Asphaltum Glaze and wash it over the paint.

If your project needs additional protection, Cottage Paint Flat Varnish works great.

Hirshfield’s Credit Manager shares this tip: If this finish is too dark, use the same procedure except after the white dries, lightly dry brush on Cottage Paint Shadow for a nice antique look.  Ben did an entire wall with his method and it turned out great.
