{battling the elements: painting the methodist hospital helipad}

If you’ve ever tackled an outdoor painting project, you understand some of the challenges facing the crew that painted the helipad at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.

Hirshfield’s Rust-Oleum representative Paul Kiminski and Lindee Construction dealt with the uncertainty of Minnesota weather along with the unique circumstances surrounding a hospital helipad.

According to Kiminski, the challenges included:

  • Working around the constant threat of rain.
  • Closing down the Emergency Room and diverting helicopters to other hospitals.
  • Shot blasting off the existing coating.
  • Detailing and taping off all the different lines and graphics.

Hirshfield’s supplied the coatings for the job, Rust-Oleum 9100 primer with an Anti-Skid Floor Coating Additive and FastKote UV Top Coat.

“The 9100 primer was used because of the surface tolerance (forgiveness of the product) and we needed something to stick to aluminum,” said Kiminski. “And they wanted anti-slip characteristics, so we added a pound of sand and pumice to each gallon of primer.”

“The FastKote UV was used because it’s a polyurea, and the helipad is outside,” he added. “So, we needed the product because of its UV stability and quick dry time, which is only 4-6 hours.”

Rust-Oleum 9100 primer is a two-component, high solids epoxy coating for use in moderate to severe environments. It is specifically designed for application directly on sound rusted steel with minimum surface preparation. It can also be used on clean steel, galvanized metal, concrete (including concrete floors), and previously coated surfaces.

FastKote UV is a high gloss, UV stable aliphatic polyurea floor coating for use in industrial and commercial facilities. Suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Hirshfield’s also worked on the helicopter pads at Mercy Hospital and Park Nicollet. For more information on this job or any of the industrial coatings available at Hirshfield’s, contact Paul Bergevin at pbergevin@hirshfields.com.
