{bits & pieces: outstanding customer service}

 The knowledgeable experts at Hirshfield’s are here to make sure your painting, staining or design project is a success. We are always happy to help any way we can, as demonstrated in this letter we received from a Woodbury customer praising Faye for her customer service and product knowledge!

Hello to those concerned,

I just wanted to take a moment to relay to you the outstanding service and advice I have been given from Faye at the Woodbury store.

Last spring I came in looking for stain for my deck. Faye quickly asked questions, that led to more questions than answers. I returned later and met with Faye again. With all the facts on hand, she was able to guide me through the process, the products I would need, and steer me to other vendors that had things I would need but were beyond the store’s range (i.e.; renting sanders) and gave me all the tips I needed to be aware of while trying to beat the weather this season.

The bottom line is that while it took all summer to get the job done, Faye was on hand to see to it I had all I needed to get it done to MY satisfaction. It was a big job and it took a long time, but Faye’s advice, driven by her understanding of what I wanted and her knowledge of the products she sells and the procedures required to do the job correctly led to a great finished product.

I hope you know and understand how valuable Faye and others with her skills and customer care concerns are to you, your business, and your customers.

I do. And I’ll be back with the next project.

Sincerely,

 G.

Thanks “G” for the fantastic email. I think we all agree Faye is a rock star!

Season’s Greetings from Hirshfield’s

Hirshfield's Christmas Letter

In this season of hope and reflection, we look back at a letter written on Christmas Eve, 71 years ago. Gilbert, a longtime Hirshfield’s employee was off serving our country during World War II, and his friends wanted to share some Christmas cheer with him.

Gilbert served in the Army’s Medical Corps, eventually becoming a POW. After the war was over, Gilbert returned to Hirshfield’s, where he continued working into his 80’s.

The reference to “Mrs. Hirshfield and the Doctor” is about Hans’ grandfather, who ran the business, but was also a practicing physician. Apparently this surprised some of his patients who, when they noticed the doctor’s paint-splattered shoes, questioned the validity of his credentials.

Here are some other letters written to Gilbert while he was overseas.

How to Remove Old Wallpaper

Ring out the old and bring in the new. What better time to freshen up your living space than the start of a new year. Giving a room a makeover during the winter is an excellent way to break a case of cabin fever. But changing wallpaper can be scary – or at least it used to be. So we have some tips to make changing old wallpaper as easy as ringing in the New Year.

New World of Wallcoverings

Hirshfield’s was founded on wallpaper back in 1894 – before ever introducing paints and window treatments to our stores. However, today’s innovative wallcoverings are not your grandmother’s wallpaper. You can forget steaming and scraping in the future. Contemporary wallpaper products are removable and breathable. Wallpaper Prints We’ve Used and Love in Minnesota Homes

“I thought I was over my wallpaper phase, but looking at what you have online has me right back into it.  Oh, some of the papers are so gorgeous!” – Hirshfield’s customer K.M.

A few months ago K.M. saw a white birch bark wallpaper in an Arizona model home and could not get the paper off her mind. She emailed Hirshfield’s and I happened to have a sample roll of the paper in my office. Karma. The birch bark paper is really a paper-thin sheet of cork, adhered to a paper backing, and dyed white. K.M. plans on hanging the paper in a powder room.

Inquiring minds want to know? What are people hanging in their homes? Jane Hedin, skilled paper hanger and long-time Hirshfield’s customer, shares intel on recent wallpaper jobs:

  • Dining Room – String, navy damask, and Sanderson green floral. All four walls were papered in these dining rooms – no feature walls.
  • Kitchen – Candice Olson geometric pattern
  • Entryway –  Birch Trees by York Wlcvg.
  • Hallway – Natural Reeds
  • Stairwell and Entry – Zoffany vinyl texture
  • Powder Room – Best of Show by Osborne and Little (black and white), Candice Olson Squiggle (glass beads), Thibaut chinoiserie, and Schumacher’s Imperial Trellis
  • Ladies Dressing Room – Nudes (black and white)
  • Mid-Century Modern Home – Black and white mural

{friday finds: 2015 pantone color of the year}

Design World Reacts to Marsala

The 2015 Pantone Color of the Year exploded onto the scene with plenty of fanfare. Marsala is a rich, earthy red, inspired by the fortified Sicilian wine. It invokes sophistication and natural earthiness with its deep hues.

The color is “nurturing and fulfilling,” says Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Marsala is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room – making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home.”

Pantone’s pick is one of the most anticipated design announcements each year, influencing fashion, beauty, interior design and home furnishings. Of course, it didn’t take long for the reviews – and product placements – to start rushing in.

Back to Basics 0255

Color of the month!

Warm up with December’s Color of the month: Back to Basics 0255.  Clean. Crisp. Classic. Hirshfield’s Color of the Month exemplifies how neutrals — yes, the clean camel “Back to Basics” is a neutral — are visually warming up this season.  For a medium-tone color it has a light and airy feel with no dominant undertones. It’s the perfect complement to the ever-popular gray palette, which often times benefits from a warming touch (see our clean camel / gray combinations below). Back to Basics represents the non-metallic color of gold which is popular today and as a paint color looks great with trim simply painted white. Jewel tones are trending clearer and Back to Basics will work well with those colors, too.  This is one instance where back to basics is fashion forward.  Onward. Read the rest of this entry »
