Window Treatment Wednesday: What Your Windows Say About You

“Personal style is not something that is just in the air. It is something you have and that you apply to yourself.” – Paloma Picasso

Our individual flair also permeates the atmosphere of homes—from furnishings to color.  Shannon Scarrella, Hirshfield’s Shop at Home, says that almost everything we put into our homes is a reflection of us, more so if a home is new construction. “If you move into a home that was built per someone else’s specifications, the finishes and selections may not be 100 percent you,” says Scarrella. “By adding custom window treatments, you can control the look that you want to achieve.”

Trendy Options

For someone who likes to stay on trend, picking window coverings can be a delicate process. “Trendy is tricky, as trends change so often. Typically, homeowners don’t change their window coverings for about seven years,” says Scarrella. “But oftentimes people who are trendy gravitate toward pattern and color—they’re a little more daring with what goes on the window.” Trendsetters may also opt for window treatments that have motorization, lifting systems or headrails.

Traditional Styles

People who are traditional in their style typically stay with honeycomb shades, wood blinds or Silhouettes—products that are proven to have staying power. They may choose drapes with more traditional styles and materials as well.

Green Choices

Homeowners who ask for green materials may be focused on making environmentally friendly choices, although more and more people are aware of the benefits of choosing energy-efficient materials. “Many of the wood materials are made from North American hardwoods, and almost every company is replanting more trees than they use in the process of making wood blinds,” says Scarrella. There are also natural materials made of reeds, grasses and other materials that are woven to make shades.

Whatever your personal style, your home can be a better fit for you thanks to the many Hirshfield’s window coverings available.
