{window treatment wednesday: treatments paired with shutters}

Pair window drapes and shutters for a unique window treatment.

I saw this quote from Minnesota’s Charles Schulz and it made me chuckle: “Decorate your home. It gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it really is.”

In all seriousness, though, we tend to have goals or visions in mind when we’re decorating our homes. Perhaps we want spaces in our home to be beautiful, impressive, warm, comforting, sophisticated, or playful. The space you’re putting together includes the windows and window treatments, which can influence a room’s atmosphere.

In some spaces, there are plantation shutters in place, but homeowners want to add another element to the window. Hirshfield’s window coverings expert Shannon Scarrella says that usually shutters are paired with drapes to add an aesthetic touch. “Shutters are for function—they control light, sun and privacy. Drapes, typically stationary side panels, add softness to a room or provide a decorative element.”

Plantation shutters come in a variety of slat sizes, depending on the manufacturer, from as small as 1.25 inches up to 4.5 inches, with the most common louver size between 2.5 and 3.5 inches.

“The larger the slat, the greater the view through,” says Scarrella. “For historic homes that want to replace interior shutters while retaining historic authenticity we usually use a smaller louver size.

Plantation shutters can be a good choice when people are seeking window coverings for windows that are of an unusual shape. They also tend to work well for front doors and sidelites.

Interior shutters come in various materials, from vinyl to hardwood, hybrids to black walnut, maple, mahogany and oak. They’re a timeless addition to your space. Scarrella says, “Although shutters are typically a more expensive product to put into your home, they’re the product that is typically in your home forever.”
