Meet window treatment expert Kathryn Gravening.
Hirshfield’s Shop at Home service in Minneapolis is home to not only some of the best options the window treatment world has to offer brought straight to you, but it is also home to some of the most experienced and creative window treatment experts in the Twin Cities. Kathryn Gravening serves as one of those professionals offering up understanding of construction, fiber, color and design.
A styling background.
Graduating from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, Kathryn is both stylish and savvy. Working at Fabric Retailers upon graduation built a foundation for her extensive fabric knowledge.
Kathryn has found a home in Hirshfield’s for her design knowledge. “Hirshfield’s believes in me,” Kathryn said. “It is wonderful to work with a company that has confidence in your abilities and gives you freedom and resources to get the job done. They give me the tools I require and provide training and inspiration.”
Kathryn can share those skills with you when selecting window treatments. To be on trend in 2013, Kathryn suggests an emphasis on greys. This muted color palette opens designs up for new patterns and hues to shine. Kathryn uses a systematic design process to work with you if grey isn’t quite your color.
“I am a detailed person, so when designing, I really like to add details such as tucks, lip cords, welting, and beading,” Kathryn said. “I like to mix and match patterns and designs. I like things that are unusual. Once I designed an Elvis Presley bedroom for a client with red and purple velvet. My design process starts with the object, a window, chair, a duvet cover etc, then I work with the client to understand their vision. I develop a plan for design, color, pattern and texture. I involve the client in all steps. I try to explain clearly what the project will look like and how it will function.”
For her own home, Kathryn prefers high ceilings with a touch of traditional. Side panels and roman shades found in soft color palettes are her favorite. She finds a way to combine comfortable with a hint of subtle luxuriousness. One staple Kathryn will suggest for all homes are JF Fabrics. This company provides a wide range of designs and weaves that are washable. Homes with children, pets, and even messy adults can wash cushions and draperies with ease.
Design can make or break a room. It transforms from drab to fab. If you’re looking for some guidance, Kathryn at Hirshfield’s Shop at Home is here to help!
