{friday finds: getting your home ready for summer}

Summer doesn’t officially start until June 20, but it’s pretty much understood here in Minnesota that Memorial Day is the “unofficial” start to summer! And with the warm temps we’ve been having here in the Twin Cities and across the state, it seems as if Mother Nature is just as anxious for summer to arrive as we are!

So let’s welcome summer into our homes with open windows and fresh decor! Here are some tips to help get your home in shape for the season!

Let the fresh air in: Welcome the warm summer weather into your home with open windows! Not only does a nice breeze help you enjoy the outdoor weather even when you’re stuck indoors, it also  just makes your home feel fresher. You can even filter the outdoor air that comes through your house with plants. Some of the best air-cleaning houseplants are snake plants, spider plants, English ivy, and small-leafed rubber plants.

Revisit your guestroom: Summer is a great season for entertaining and inviting out-of-town guests to stay for the weekend. If you haven’t touched your guest room since Christmas, now is a good time to touch things up with a fresh coat of paint or some new bed linen.

Stay safe from the sun: When you’re outside it’s a good idea to lather up on sunscreen to protect your skin from the summer sun exposure. It’s also a good idea to take the same preventative measures inside your home. We’re not talking about applying sunscreen to your floors and furniture, but we are talking about window treatments that filter natural light. Many Hunter Douglas window fashions, including Silhouette® window shadings and Luminette® Privacy Sheers available at Hirshfield’s, filter out as much as 86% of harmful UV rays in the open-vane position.

Hunter Douglas is offering rebates, through June 17, 2012, on the following products:  Luminette®, Silhouette®, Pirouette®, and Duette® Architella® shades.
