{make a statement}

The other day I stopped by Hirshfield’s Design Studio to talk trends with Kathy Basil. Working at the Design Studio, Kathy says she sees new trends pop up about every six months. Currently, Kathy said the design trend is all about making a statement.

“It’s about finding that one piece of furniture that makes you happy and also leaves a strong impression on anyone who enters your house. Statement pieces are all about being one-of-a-kind with a unique story to tell.”

Here are some of Kathy’s favorite statement pieces from Hirshfield’s Design Studio.

Be still my beating heart.

House of Turquoise did a week-long blog tour of this Utah reader’s dream home. Cristi and her husband Jeff recently finished this incredible house and then shared photos with House of Turquoise. Cristi’s inspiration? Her design file filled with favs saved over the years and House of Turquoise.

This Friday Find is showcasing the wallcovering and paint used in the home. The home is filled with wallcovering – so there, all you naysayers. Starting off, this home wins hands down, “the curb appeal” award.

Love this room

Are you in love with this house as much as I am? I can’t think of anything I would change in the house. Reclaimed wood, rugs, window treatments, it’s all perfection.

Here’s a link to start the tour at the House of Turquoise. There are more paint and wallcovering photos which I’ll put on Facebook.  Hirshfield’s carries Thibaut  Wallcovering and Benjamin Moore Paints, so stop by and check out your favorites.

{hirshfield’s paint manufacturing tour}

Did you know that gallon of Hirshfield’s paint you just purchased was manufactured right here in Minneapolis? Hirshfield’s employees live where they work and serve their communities with high quality products that are innovative, environmentally friendly and made right here in Minnesota.

{friday finds: the anniversary collection by thibaut}

Celebrating Thibuat’s 125 years in business, the company is honoring its past with a traditional collection of document prints and designs.

Phoebe wallpaper and Montgomery fabric

Thibaut has taken inspiration from antique documents, embroideries, maps, and textiles gathered from countries around the world;  reinterpreting the patterns to reflect the creative and distinct look of a Thibaut wallpaper and fabric. Also, with this collection Thibaut expanded their fabric selections which coordinate and complement the wallcovering offerings.

The books have arrived and are in the stores ready and waiting for your perusal. Call your “home” store and make certain they have the book on hand. Customers check out the books and not all the stores have the same books.

Congratulations Thibaut on 125 years in business!

{getting your deck ready for summer}

Summertime means spending time outdoors, enjoying the great weather on your patio or deck. If your deck needs some work, it’s not too late to get it looking great.

Working with stains doesn’t have to be a messy, complicated process anymore. Hirshfield’s offers several products to make your project a success. Sikkens Cetol Waterborne for Siding, Rails and Decks is a great translucent finish and is available in 8 colors.
This product is easy to use and easy to clean up with just soap and water. It also dries to the touch in 2-4 hours (you can walk on it in 24 hours) so you don’t have to worry too much about the forecast.

Benjamin Moore ARBORCOAT is also a great option for your deck. It’s low maintenance and will keep your deck looking new for years – it even provides a mildew-resistant coating to your deck.
This product also uses waterborne technology so it’s easy to apply and clean up.  And, it’s better for the planet.

This previous post features great advice on getting your deck in top shape. We always recommend using a semi-transparent stain or clear finish with UV protectors so the grain shows.  When it’s time to get to work, make sure your deck is dry. Sprinkle some drops of water on the wood — if it is absorbed into the wood it’s ready to accept a penetrating stain or deck finish. If the water beads up, you’ll need to sand it, power wash it or use a deck cleaning product to get it ready. Let the deck dry for 2-3 days and then apply your finish.

Deck coatings in Minnesota do not last forever. A semi-transparent stain will most likely need to be redone every 2-3 years. A good cleaning is always recommended and if there is mildew present it will need to be killed with a mixture of bleach and water. Again, let the deck dry for 2-3 days and then apply your stain.

Visit the deck page on our website for more tips to keep your deck looking brand new!

{inspiration room: home office}

If you’ve ever tried the “work from home” approach, you know how easy it can be to become distracted by a phone call, or the kids, or that pile of laundry that’s staring you right in the face. While good design can’t stop the phone from ringing or the kids from calling out your name, it can help cut down on distractions.

Since productivity requires efficiency and organization, home offices should be well-lit, stocked with storage, organized, quiet and comfortable. Yet since your home office is in your home, you don’t want it to have a sterile, overly-corporate feel. The key is striking a balance between “homey” and “professional.”

Dedicating one wall to shelves and storage will free up the rest of the room for furniture. It will also (hopefully!) prevent piles of papers and folders from being started haphazardly around the space – a place for everything and everything in its place!

Apartment Therapy

Curtains can help soften the space and hide the storage shelves.
