Gender neutral colors are great when you are expecting but don’t know your baby’s gender – but gender neutral does not mean gender boring. Pastel yellow has long been the perfect color for those not in the know. Today’s yellow for tomorrow’s toddler is bright and mixed with neon lime, orange and blue.
Orange is hot in many areas of the home this year and does not shy away from kid’s rooms. This warm hue is a perfect accent for a neutral beige with a splash of green to brighten it up.
We love looking at amazing rooms for children for inspiration. We’ve featured bedrooms for young baseball fans, Harry Potter wizards-to-be, rooms fit for princesses and some adorable nurseries.
The post about nurseries was inspired by my quest to create a nursery in my home that would be appropriate for a boy or girl. My husband and I are waiting to find out the gender of our first child. We started with a lovely shade of yellow like this:

and ended up with a room looking like this:
We chose black furniture to pop against the yellow and add a richness to the room. Reds, whites and blacks are the main accent colors for the nursery. We kept things gender neutral by adding graphic animal prints. We just loved how the black and white animals stand out against a solid background.
We also chose a rug in a graphic print that could transition into another room in our home later on.
Of course safety is the key factor in everything you add to a nursery – so our bedding is simple and clean.
Storage and organization are also key so we found colorful bins to finish out the bookshelf and hand-painted bookends for baby’s first library.
We added a bit of whimsy to the space with black and white gingham curtains and crib skirt. I’m lucky enough to have a mom who is a great seamstress so these are custom made and tailored exactly how we wanted them. They’re also lined with black-out fabric to keep the room dark and more energy efficient!
When the baby is born, we’ll add the personal touch of his or her name or monogram over the crib. What are your favorite colors or themes for a baby’s room?

We’re waiting to find out if we’re having a boy or a girl – so we have the added challenge of making sure the nursery is “gender neutral.” Don’t mistake gender neutral for boring. You can use the rainbow of colors available to paint your walls, or maybe use a more subtle all-over hue and then make it pop with stripes, an accent wall or mural!

It’s similar to Benjamin Moore Mellow Yellow and is a great backdrop for almost any accent we decided on. The room will soon be filled with black furniture, colorful artwork and black and white accents. I’ll share the finished product in a future post.
When you’re designing a space for a little boy or girl, it’s great to have the room be able to grow with them. One way to do that is to look at what you put on the walls. Murals and wall decals are a great way to add personality without a long-term commitment.

One tip to remember if you’re putting together a nursery without knowing your baby’s gender: leave a space or two open to personalize the room when your little one arrives. This can be as simple as his or her name in letters or monogram above the crib.
