The holiday season is full of traditions – the traditional Christmas tree, the traditional Christmas cookies and the traditional Christmas color combination of red and green. And while we would never mess with the traditional Christmas tree or cookies, when it comes to colors, we like to bend the rules a little bit.
Being complimentary (opposite) colors on the color wheel, red and green create nice visual interest when used together. But we think this non-traditional color palette of candy apple green and chocolate brown creates a gorgeous, rustic holiday atmosphere.
Jewel tones like rich blues and purples make a regal statement. These colors are still reminiscent of traditional rich reds and greens but offer a more modern touch.
And don’t be afraid to go a little funky with your color scheme. Erin at House of Turquoise has a great collection of non-traditional holiday design photos over on her blog. A little turquoise and hot pink over the holidays never hurt anyone! And don’t hesitate to throw in a little Tangerine Tango, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2012.
